A Tribute to Nasser Zefzafi and the Rif

22nd November 2018/0 Comments/in Interviews, Morocco /by Alena Kahle

Officially, Nasser Zefzafi was convicted for separatism; documents of his jailing condemn him for being a terrorist, apparently opposed to Islam and the foundation of the Moroccan state. MOROCCO

Laws that have been enacted recently in Morocco affect the advancement of free expression as well as the rights of domestic workers, people with disabilities and victims of human trafficking. Unfair trails with long prison terms has continued to affect the people of Morocco for politically motivated offenses. Even with the advancement of free expression, authorities have restricted the activities of local human rights associations. Moreover, on July 26, 2017, the Moroccan parliament accepted a new press and Publications Code which should essentially enable progress for freedom of press. However, publishers and journalists still continue to get lawsuits for publishing relevant information to the public through publications or websites even though the Code should protect them. Another injustice that continues in Morocco is sending people to jail who are involved in same-sex conduct under article 489 of the penal code which strictly prohibits “lewd or unnatural acts with an individual of the same sex.” Also, prosecution occurs to women and girls that are found to be pregnant outside marriage or are rape victims while filing charges that are not thoroughly sustained (Human Rights Watch 2016).
