FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about the Counter-Summit and the Protest for Peace and Justice.

1. What exactly are you organizing around the NATO summit?

We are organizing a Counter-Summit for Peace and Justice on June 21 and 22, and a large Protest for Peace and Justice on June 22 at 14:00 in The Hague.

During the Counter-Summit, Dutch and international voices for peace will come together in panels, lectures, and workshops to discuss alternatives to NATO’s current aggressive and imperialist military policies.

On Sunday, June 22, we will take to the streets with as many people as possible to send a strong signal for peace and justice, and against war, military aggression, arms races, and austerity.

No NATO war summit!

2. What’s wrong with NATO?

NATO represents the Western military power bloc. Its main function is to enforce the dominance of the U.S. and its allies around the world through military force — in pursuit of political power, resources, and economic supremacy.

NATO’s weapons, aggression, and hunger for global dominance do not protect peace, safety, or the rights of ordinary people. Instead, they provoke hostility, war, and destruction — as shown by NATO’s horrific record in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya, and by its current aggressive stance toward countries it has declared enemies.

3. Why are you opposed to this NATO summit?

The NATO summit brings together key leaders of the Western military bloc, including figures like Donald Trump, Erdoğan, and Orbán. They will discuss new strategies to secure political power and access to global resources through warfare.

Massive new investments in weapons and military escalation are expected to be announced — financed by international cuts to healthcare, education, pensions, social protections, and climate budgets — including in the Netherlands.

4. So are you siding with Russia?

No, absolutely not. We oppose all forms of imperialism, oppression, and war — whether it comes from Russia, NATO, or any other state. Putin is a dictator, and his invasion of Ukraine is a horrific crime. But NATO also played a role in the origins of the conflict. NATO leaders knew that eastward expansion would provoke confrontation. Ukrainians are paying the ultimate price, while the West profits from the war itself, the geopolitical fallout, and the weakening of a rival.

We stand in solidarity with Russian peace activists resisting the Putin regime. At the same time, it is our responsibility in the West to resist our own side of the war machine.

5. What is your alternative to NATO’s policies?

We advocate for a world where peace, security, and justice for all are at the center — instead of the geopolitical and economic interests of a small group of wealthy elites in the West.

To achieve that, we need to build a broad movement — both nationally and internationally — that can create serious alternatives. The Counter-Summit is meant as a platform for that conversation.

6. Why are you protesting on Sunday and not during the summit itself?

We want our demonstration to be safe and accessible to everyone. During the NATO summit, the city will be heavily restricted, and there will be an extreme police presence — increasing the risk of arrests and violence. On Sunday, most people are off work, making it easier for families, young people, and elders to join our peaceful and inclusive protest march.

7. Are there other events I can attend that weekend?

Yes. We’re not the only ones organizing against the NATO summit. On Saturday, June 21, the Socialist Party (SP) is organizing the International Summit for Peace, and Resist NATO is hosting the People’s Summit.

8. What is your stance on conspiracy theorists and far-right figures who claim to be “pro-peace”?

We distance ourselves from anyone who expresses racist, homophobic, transphobic, antisemitic, or sexist views. We are a broad movement for peace, justice, human rights, and climate justice.

We do not spread conspiracy theories, we are not pro-Russia, and we stand firmly against all forms of discrimination.

Where some groups oppose NATO out of nationalism or sympathy for Putin, we stand for solidarity, equality, and a peaceful world for everyone.
