Believe in Human Rights Festival

10 december 2023

Grote Kerk

Summary

Long announced, on December 10th we gathered in the Grote Kerk in The Hague; 19 Dutch human rights organisations based in The Hague organised a festival together to celebrate the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 75 years ago.

With Initiatives of Change taking the lead, The Hague Peace Projects and the other organisations present, spent the day supporting the call for peace and human rights. After a friendly get-together of volunteers and staff, each organisation held an activity for the public in special semi-closed tents that decorated the inside of the church.

The Hague Peace Projects’ tent was dedicated to dialogue about war and human rights. We presented three questions that were discussed in three groups at the small round tables:

  • What do we feel, confronted with violent wars? (the participants wrote a word on a stone).
  • What are common features of the armed conflicts we know about? (the participants listed features of war on a card).
  • Are there things that we do, or could do to de-escalate war together? (the participants noted some vows and ideas on a table cloth).

The dialogue resulted in eagerness to open our minds and analyze the dynamics of war from a military, media, and human development perspective. We concluded that citizens and civil society in general could be more proactive in trying to prevent the use of force and lethal weapons in solving conflicts; to find ways to cure hatred and despair in children; and to strongly promote public pleas for nonviolent conflict resolution methods, such as arbitration, de-escalation, contact with the opponent through small steps, diplomacy, and respect for internationally agreed laws for the protection of vulnerable lives.

At the end of the event, 45 participants signed a petition to urge the UN Security to put a stop to the Russian bombing of Ukraine territory.

Uitnodiging (NL)
